Disturbed (Milk Spoilers) - Why are you making me feel sympathy for Dan White?

This weekend Erik and I joined Brandon for a late showing of Milk, the biopic of Harvey Milk, the first opening gay man to be elected to office (as San Fran City Supervisor). I had been happily anticipating the film.

I was a bit let down. Not due to the plot, or any of the acting, but ironically, by the depiction of Dan White, the disgruntled city supervisor that assassinated Harvey MIlk and the mayor of San Francisco.

Why was the depiction distrubing? was it the raw emotion of a man on the edge? was it seeing a person struggle with his own demons and taking it out on innocent colleages?

No. It was not that, becasue that wasn't in the film. Instead, writer Dustin Lance Black and director Gus Van Sant chose to marginalize that aspect of the story. While Dan White was shown to be frustrated, they chose to simplify him by attributing his frustration on his borderline anti-gay believes and interaction with Milk. Even going so far as to infer in one scene Milk that White may even have been a closeted homeosexual.

But at the same time, there was no mention that Dan White's campaign manager was openingly gay. Or that Dan White supported Milk's agenda, including many gay issues, up until the time at which Milk voted for an issue that White was against. Or that after this vote, White then invited Milk to his son's christening - a point the film depicts as happening prior to this fall out.

I guess it just felt like the film made it out that Milk was killed by White becasue he was gay. And I'm not sure that is accurate, or as simple a reasoning.
______________________________________________________________________________________

My feelings come on the heels of an anti-gay op-ed piece that ran in the UW's The Daily. Erik forwarded me an email from a solcialist organization that linked to the peice and gave info on their protest of it. In addition, Dan Savage wrote on The Stranger's Slog about the irrational peice that equated gay marriage with incest and beastiality (stupid arguments, although not entirely new).
When I heard about this I felt outraged.

What both failed to mention was the fact that that article ran beside another op-ed piece that argued for gay marriage. So it was less of a stand alone homophobic peice than the open discussion of two conflicting points.

When I learned this I was even more outraeged. I felt lied to.

And I guess that's how I felt about Dan White in the film Milk. I felt that by marginalizing the way in which Harvey Milk was assassinated, it undercut the story. When it is such an inspirational story that should be told, and Milk was an inspirational hero that should be remembered.

Last night I went to the Jet City 201 & 301Student Showcase that my former classmates Jon and Ilias were performing in.

Turns out several of the 201 students were also in the physicality worshop I took last month. After the show, when we were at the bar celebrating the show, a few of them said I was really good and they thought I was really funny. One guy even said I was one of the best in class.

It's always nice to hear stuff like that, especially since I'm my own worst critic.

It's strange how I spent all this time (childhood) secretly wanting people to think I was funny and now when someone tells me they think I am, I feel like they can't possibly be telling the truth.

Anyways, may have a few new members of our troupe soon.
I've heard a lot of suggestions for helping folks stuck in too high home payments for homes and loans that they probably shouldn't have gotten in the first place.

I've heard some say the banks should renegotiate the loans to reduce the principal to current makret value. I'm not sure that i agree with this, but it's more me being bitter that others would received this and I and others who didn't get themselves in this situation would have to help pay for it.

I've heard some say that their interest rates should be lowered.
This sounds ok, but I'm not entirely clear on what effects it could have and need to learn more.

What I haven't heard is anyone saying to make their loan terms longer, like turn their 30 year in to a 45 year. Wouldn't that help lower their monthly payments AND protect the banks from losing money?
Wouldn't that allow people to stay in their home?

Is there a reason why that isn't possible?
I normally don't buy, but today I decided to use that dollar for good.

Cut to a minute ago, when I realized that Real Change was from three weeks ago..... so nothing in it is interesting or current....
Voter Questionnaire

Given some shocking video and statements of some McCain supporters (a fringe hopefully) I recommend all McCain voters fill out this questionnaire to determine their eligibility:

1. Are you voting for John McCain because Barack Obama is Black?
If Yes, You are too racist to vote

2. Are you voting for John McCain becasue Barack Obama is a muslim?
If Yes, You are too uninformed to vote

3. Are you taking a Curious Goerge Monkey with an Obama nametag to the McCain rally with you?
If Yes, You fail as a human being, and thus should not be able to vote

4. Are you voting for John McCain becasue you believe in his economic and social policies and that he is the leader that will make America the type of country you are proud of?
Congratulations! You have educated yourself enough to be deemed worthy of voting. Granted, I personally disagree with you, but at least you are basing your vote on rational thought and convictions.

If you've been around me for the last 2 1/2 years, it comes as no surprize that I am in love. I know, I'm too mushy and too giggly and too everything. I know, I just can't help it.

Since I had Monday off for a holiday devoted to someone that didn't do what we celebrate them for, I ended my Sunday night TV with a trip to the Merc to (finally) show some support for my boyfriend's DJing.

He was in between sets by , like, two hours and we just hung out and joked around and talk the way we do at night, which is my favorite part of the day with him.

Somehow, someway I have met the love of my life. It's overwhelming at times and I can't express how loved I feel.
